NJMC 4o Years of Progress
A New Day in the Meadowlands /Special Photos / Timeline
NJMC Background
The Hackensack Meadowlands Development Commission was established on January 13, 1969, to oversee planning, development, environmental protection and solid waste management within the 30-square-mile Meadowlands District. In 2001, the agency changed its name to the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission and, in the years that followed, the Commission suspended plans to fill and develop additional wetlands and refocused on redeveloping brownfields, and preserving and/or restoring 8,400 acres of this critical urban estuary.
The NJMC also plays a direct role in supporting the activities of 10 Bergen County and four Hudson County communities. Over the past 40 years the Commission – which is funded by solid waste revenue, instead of public, taxpayer dollars – has spurred $7.6 billion in development, which generated $1.8 billion in tax revenue for these communities. In addition, the NJMC has appropriated tens of millions of dollars in direct aid and regional projects that benefit District Municipalities, including $8 million for flood relief in the past three years alone.
