Introduction

Since its establishment in 1969, the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission has worked to ensure the proper control, closure, and remediation of landfills throughout the Meadowlands District. Landfills that once lay exposed to the open air, leaked garbage into waterways and sent plumes of smoke across the New Jersey Turnpike have been remediated, and environmental controls are today in place to collect liquid leachate, methane and carbon dioxide gas emissions.
