Emissions Reduction Initiatives

The NJMC staff recommends policies and initiatives to municipal leaders to lower greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality in adherence with Kyoto Protocol, an international effort supported by the agency and the 14 Meadowlands municipalities.  NJMC air quality policies and regulations are designed as models for other communities and have received recognition from the United States Environmental Protection Agency.  Some measures include:

  • Conversion of the NJMC fleet into fuel-efficient hybrid vehicles
  • An ongoing air quality study and carbon footprint analysis
  • Green building and renewable energy initiatives

The NJMC is currently involved in several air quality studies in cooperation with the Environmental and Occupational Health Services Institute at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers University-Newark. The studies measure air pollution from fixed and mobile sources around the District. A personal air quality component of the study measures the actual exposure to air toxins to individuals moving about in the District.
