Municipal Shared Services
The Meadowlands Commission provides a variety of free shared services to District Municipalities in an effort to help these communities maintain programs and services, without raising taxes. Call the NJMC at 201-460-1700 to learn more, or visit the links below for details on these services.
Municipal Equipment Pool
The NJMC maintains a fleet of heavy vehicles to help District Municipalities address flooding and sewer-line issues, among other concerns. Vehicles, including a camera-truck, vac-truck and root cutter, are staffed by Commission employees and available to towns 24-7 for emergencies, free of charge. For information and online vehicle registration, click here.
Construction Code and Plan Review
The NJMC has licensed code officials available to help District Municipalities with various reviews, including building, electrical, fire, plumbing and elevator subcodes. For more information click here.
GIS Mapping and Alerts
The Commission’s Geographic Information Systems group creates multi-layered Web-based maps for District Municipalities to aid emergency responders and other community officials. The group, part of the NJMC’s Meadowlands Environmental Research Institute, also oversees the Commission’s emergency warning system, which provides detailed flood alerts to assist municipal officials with their storm responses. For details click here.
Professional Planning Services
Commission staff is available to assist District Municipalities with planning for mass transit, downtown revitalization and other projects through the Sustainable Communities Planning Service. Staff can also help municipalities apply for various outside grants and loans and assist them in getting recognized for existing sustainability efforts. For details click here.
Municipal Solar Program
The Commission is working with local governments to help them create solar projects that can lower their power costs and provide clean energy. This service can save school districts and municipalities within the Meadowlands tens of thousands of dollars on consultants alone and could generate far more savings in the future.
