The Meadowlands, located in both Bergen and Hudson Counties, encompass 32 square miles or 19,730 acres. As an integral part of the Hudson Raritan Estuary, the significance of the Meadowlands lies in it being one of the largest wetland complexes remaining in the HRE ecosystem, as well as being one of the largest contiguous blocks of open space in the highly developed landscape of the New York City-metropolitan area. The approximately 8,400 acres of remaining wetlands and waterways are especially significant for concentrations of federal trust wildlife species.

Narrated by Avery Brooks and shot in High Definition video, "Turning the Tide" stars retired NJMC Senior Naturalist Don Smith and NJMC Outreach Naturalist Gabrielle Bennett-Meany. The documentary offers breathtaking looks at the Meadowlands wetlands and wildlife, as well as a valuable lesson on environmental recovery.

The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission recently

received a delivery of tree swallow nest boxes from

Cub Scout Pack 475 of St. Anne’s Church in Jersey City.

The scouts, ranging from grades 1-5, followed NJMC designs

and completed 30 boxes as part of service project.

Each spring, the NJMC places the boxes throughout the

Meadowlands to enhance wetlands sites and provide homes

for the small, blue-and-white metallic birds that migrate

to the region.
